Les personnes atteintes de démence présentent souvent de l'agressivité, de la résistance aux soins et d'autres comportements difficiles ou perturbateurs. Dans de tels cas, des médicaments antipsychotiques sont souvent prescrits, mais leurs avantages sont limités et ils peuvent causer des dommages graves, y compris la mort prématurée. L'utilisation de ces médicaments doit être limitée aux cas où les mesures non pharmacologiques ont échoué et où les patients représentent une menace imminente pour eux-mêmes ou d'autres personnes. Le fait de déterminer et de traiter les causes du changement de comportement peut rendre un traitement médicamenteux inutile.
