Table 2. Risk factors for hyperkalemia
Prior to advising an increase in potassium intake, the following
types of patients, who are at high risk of developing hyperkalemia,
should be assessed for suitability, and monitored closely:
- Patients taking renin-angiotensin-aldosterone inhibitors
- Patients on other drugs that can cause hyperkalemia (e.g., trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole, amiloride, triamterene)
- Chronic kidney disease (glomerular filtration rate <60 mL/min/1.73m2)
- Baseline serum potassium >4.5 mmol/L
